Sidney Opiyo is a Kenya-based conservation photographer, environmental educator, and the Focal Point for the Food Security Thematic Group at the UNCCD Youth Caucus. In an interview ahead of the GEF Assembly, he reflected on the power of storytelling for nature conservation, climate change response, and youth action.

Finance is a key component of climate adaptation, mitigation and development, but a fundamental injustice underlies the global climate crisis: those who have benefited the least from the fossil fuel-driven economic growth model causing dangerous greenhouse gas emissions are also those who have already been most severely impacted by the effects of climate change.

Sidney believes in youth-led conservation practices, and his preferred means to achieving this goal is through photography and storytelling.
Through this, he hopes to inspire action, advocate for substantial youth involvement in climate action, and foster a deeper connection between people and the planet.
