Exploring a New Earth Vision

I had the honor of attending the Global Landscape Forum (GLF) Nairobi 2023 Hybrid Conference which was a vibrant global gathering that transcended borders. The audience was invited to think inclusively about the New Vision, leading to a profound exploration of the conference theme, “A New Vision for Earth.” Describing the new vision as a resilience of the mind and a belief in degrowth for a sustainable future, the speakers encouraged reflection through discussions, rooted in mindfulness and inspired by Adrienne Rich’s words. Here are a few insights from the myriad of speeches.

1. GLF’s Evolution and Global Impact

Reflecting on the journey of the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), the speaker highlighted its evolution and global impact. From community-led chapters to restoration stewards, the GLF’s holistic approach to landscape management took center stage. Despite pandemic challenges, the forum witnessed remarkable growth, emphasizing a rising global interest in sustainable practices.

2. Reshaping Earth for Prosperity and Resilience

The focus shifted to reshaping Earth’s landscape for productivity, prosperity, and resilience. Women emerged as key contributors to this vision, with promises of insights from scientists, activists, and government leaders. Yaminah Saheb’s presentation underscored the urgency for change, highlighting the planet’s current state. Saheb, a lead author of The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), presented evidence showing that humanity is already experiencing climate change impacts.

She argued for actionable steps to limit global warming and then emphasized the need for collective action to address underlying drivers such as colonialism and unequal resource distribution.

Dr. Agus Justianto, Director General of Sustainable Forest Management, Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia, outlined Indonesia’s strides in environmental policy and sustainable forest management. The spotlight then shifted to Indonesia’s representative and discussing efforts to reduce deforestation and promote environmental conservation.

5. Women’s Visionary Insights on A Sustainable Future

Vandana Shiva (Environmental Activist) and Ayisha Siddiqa (Co-Founder, of Polluters Out)  shared visionary insights. Aisha’s love poem called for a soft and revolutionary future, emphasizing the need to protect the Earth. Vanana advocated for recognizing the Earth as a living entity, calling for a shift towards sustainable, ecological practices.

Aisha emphasized our ability to solve problems and urged constant reflection among activists and practitioners. She highlighted the ongoing Global Forum on Environment (GFE) in Nairobi and African states, urging action on the climate crisis.

6. Urgency for Immediate Sustainable Solutions

The call for a new vision extended to ending the era of fossil fuels. Discussions focused on the environmental and health impacts of fossil fuel production, emphasizing the need for decisive government action and sustainable alternatives. The plenary concluded with a call for immediate and innovative solutions, including proposals to reform multilateral bank procedures for quick climate-related finance access.
